Equip yourselves with the RTI Act: CIC

Mokokchung, November 11 (DIPR): Chief Information Commissioner (CIC)
of Nagaland, Talitemjen Ao, on November 9 impressed upon the Public
Information Officers (PIOs) and Assistant Public Information Officers
(APIOs) of public authority to equip themselves with the Right to
Information Act to ensure that they provide as much information to the
public in accordance with the provisions of the Act. He said PIOs and
APIOs play a vital role in providing information to those who seek
information and render assistance to the persons seeking such
information under the Act. He was addressing the PIOs/APIOs and Head
of Offices of Mokokchung district in the DC's conference hall on
Monday.
Talitemjen Ao said that the spirit of RTI Act is to share as much
information between the governors and the governed to ensure that
there is transparency and accountability in the governance. The former
Chief Secretary of Nagaland stressed that all PIOs/APIOs are liable to
be penalised and he, therefore, called upon them to be well versed
with the Act. Referring to the importance of training for PIOs and
APIOs, the CIC said there are about one thousand PIOs in the state;
however, only 350 to 400 PIOs and APIOs have received training.
Responding to suggestions put forward by Watsü Mungdang leaders on the
importance of sensitising and creating awareness among citizens, the
CIC admitted that there is an urgent need to sensitise citizens, and
suggested that the Deputy Commissioner should hold frequent
interaction with leaders of NGOs on the subject. He also suggested
that besides the Watsü Mungdang, the Ao Students conference should
also play a role to educate the public on the RTI Act.
